Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) has partnered with Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, Drax Group, and other companies to build the world’s first biomass-fueled ship. This innovative vessel aims to reduce carbon emissions by 22% by using gases generated from onboard biomass combustion for propulsion.

The project, initiated under a new memorandum of understanding (MoU), targets the handysize vessel segment, which poses challenges for decarbonization due to its small fuel tanks. Drax Group’s Chief Operating Officer, Paul Sheffield, emphasized the significance of this development in achieving carbon negativity by 2030 and transforming shipping with new, sustainable technology.
